What would you do if you were faced with a task that went completely against the values on which you were raised?

What would you do if refusal to carry it out would doom your professional career, but doing it might distance your wife, and could even tear your family away from you?

And what would you do if your husband was drawn into a swirling action that went completely against your humanitarian spirit? If his activities and life style differed so markedly from the values you wish to endow to your children?

"You don't break up a home. It’s that simple a home is not something you take apart, period. Once you get married, you’re married for life. From then on, you just keep climbing the ladder until you reach the top. There’s no opportunity to stand still and look down, nor to look around to see whether or not it suits you. End of story."

It is with these words - spoken so authoritatively by Colonel Udi Am-Shalom - that the novel Final Call for Happiness begins. He makes this statement, however, before his sensitive wife Yael meets an experienced older man, a master artist of love and courtship, and before he himself has to evacuate a family from a Jewish settlement in the Gaza Strip in the line of duty, on government orders. Only after these two life-changing events does Udi grasp how lonely and isolated he really is, and how deeply he yearns for the most basic bond ”" the one between a husband and a wife.

This contemporary novel follows the unfolding events leading to the withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and their impact on the life of one typical Israeli family. Although this withdrawal is geographically far from them, it penetrates the deepest cracks in the walls of their home. Constantly flowing from the personal into the national it depicts the acute pain that disengagements entail, and the agony that ensues when something whole is unraveled. The national turmoil serves as a backdrop to the gradual crumbling of the Am-Shalom family, and to the reconstruction efforts aimed at bringing new hope and meanings.

˃˃˃ Voices of four members of one family

Final Call for Happiness is an accomplished and affecting work, narrated in the voices of four members of one family the measured, decisive voice of Udi, a right wing, army man; the dreamy poetic voice of his wife Yael, a secular leftist literary editor; the broken stammer of their twelve years old stuttering son, Ophir, who suffers from ADHD, and whole heartedly believes that he holds the power to rescue his father from the dilemma he faces and save his parents' marriage; and the sad, sweet words of little six years old Maya, who is much too mature for her age.

˃˃˃ Emotionally grasping from beginning to end

This is a powerful story, written in a unique style, in a language that is surprising at times. It looks at the emerging differences between individuals in a marriage, in a family, and in a crowd. It chronicles how Attention Deficit affects parenthood in our times, how at times spoken words cannot fully express our feelings, thoughts and emotions, and how every disengagement brings with it a call for closeness and love.

I liked this book I got this book for review but what I tell you is how I truly feel about this book. I thought that it like I was reading two books until in the middle. One thing I liked was when the therapists didn't respond the boy hopped up and walked over to the window, joyfully watching the raindrops cascading down the glass. I thought the therapists was crazy when she diagnosed him with overly associative speech because she wasn't talking to him so he walked away I mean that's something I would do and I have ADHD. I liked that part where "Udi claimed that's when he fell in love with me." You know that the husband had story feelings for the wife from the start. I like the fact that she was a young soldier serving in the Northern Command when she meet her husband. I know how it is to have a man/woman you love be a soldier because my boyfriend is in the army right now and I couldn't be most happy for him. I think the story is sweet about the wife and her husband but I think it's sad that the little boy can't talk or maybe he didn't want to talk. I read love stories most that anything and this one is a love story at the beginning. I'm still working on reading the book but I will read this one all the way to end. I haven't found out if the wife and husband had the son before or after they got married that's something I would like to know which most people wouldn't care. I would say this book is one of the top books I had got the read this year that wasn't for the kids. I didn't see any bad words which I like when I'm read I like to see clean words and the writer to express herself/ herself. I will be telling my friends about this book and getting them to read it.

A good read.
What a treat to receive such an enjoyable book at no charge from for readers. I'd like to thank the author for generously providing the material free of charge.
Certainly not for me, did we read the same book.
I really loved the Israeli angle. the Story line is very interesting and the writing is very good.
I could relate with each one of the characters.
The story ends with a taste for more,I think there should be a second part for the story describing the family when the children are older. That could be a nice sequel.
This contemporary narrative follows the unfolding events leading up to the withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and its impact on the life of one archetypal Israeli family. This is a compelling story, written in a distinctive style. It stares straight in the face at the emerging disparities between individuals in a marriage and in a family.

This story also records how Attention Deficit Disorder affects parents today. And, how at times, even spoken words cannot fully express our feelings, opinions and emotions, and how every DISENGAGEMENT brings with it a call for awareness and love.

I couldn't recommend this book highly enough!
A family drama that takes on all sorts of rich elements is found here. Tamara Avner brings together several elements from religious to personal as told through the perspectives of a family that is being torn apart by lots of little things. As the world around these individuals change, so does their relationships, and their stories, as well as reflections as to the present, future and more. There is so much here about family, individualism, and more that you really feel like you're reading an epic story. The sum of the perspectives highlights so much so well that it will grip your heart as you turn the pages.
The story deals with voices from all of the characters of the book. The husband and father Udi who is currently a high ranking officer in the military, Yael his wife who once was a solider within the same military her husband serves but is more intellectual and idealistic, oldest child Ophir who has not only has ADHD as well as stutter that he knows and feels even more so that sets him apart from his family and the youngest child Maya who is so very observant and often times seems to be the wisest of them all.

The family faces the events leading up to and beyond the withdrawal of the Gaza strip and how it impacts each family member is well detailed and while the children hopelessly watched their parents struggle with their marriage and what was happening in their world, they came to find peace within themselves.

While this book is difficult to read, it a good book, with well written character voices that delve deeper into each personality and you set it down feeling like you have truly experienced first hand the heartache, frustration, and finally happiness they all do. It is a book that you truly have to take your time and read as it skips between characters quickly and I found myself going back to re-read a couple of pages because I was not giving the book my full attention and was completely lost, but it was an engaging story nonetheless.
